Event 4 Recap

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

After a back-and-forth heads-up battle that lasted more than two hours, Eric Rappaport came out on top, claiming his first Borgata Open trophy, $45,183, and a customized 16 x 20 framed photo with Borgata chip and event information plaque.

Vitor Coelho took 2nd place and $25,099.  He just missed claiming his second Borgata Open title.  (Coelho won the $1,500 NLH event during the 2009 Borgata Poker Open, good for $107,100.)  If he hadn't caught a 5-outer when all-in against eventual 3rd place finisher Jason Gardner, Coelho would have been out in 4th place.  Instead, he doubled up and 4th place went to Abraham Korotki, who already has three Borgata Open titles to his credit.

The lure of the Deep Stack brought out 345 entries, building total buy-ins of $172,500.   The final 36 players got paid.

Eighteen players survived 18 levels of play on day one and returned today for day two.  Seong Wook Hong was the chip leader coming into day two, but he couldn't hold on and busted out in 7th place.  The last woman sitting in this event was Serina Cheang (Alexandria, VA).  She finished 12th for $2,175.

Eric Rappaport used to be an online grinder, but has moved to brick-and-mortar since Black Friday, plus grinding online in Mexico.  He cashed in the WSOP Main Event this summer (407th place for $28,063) but this is his largest win on record.

He wasn't going to play this event, but decided to late-register.  He won a "big flip" early on, and never looked back.  He entered day two tied for third in chips, but had dropped to 8th out of ten when they went to the final table.  "It was a grind" he said.

About his heads-up opponent Vitor Coelho, Rappaport said "he showed no emotion, he played tough".  He also commented that the Borgata tournament "field sizes and prize pools are really great."  When asked what events he would play for the rest of the series, he replied "all of them".

Eric dedicated this win to his father.

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Eric Rappaport (Lansdale, PA)
$45,183

After a back-and-forth heads-up battle lasting more than two hours, Eric Rappaport came out on top, claiming his first Borgata Open trophy, $45,183, and a customized 16 x 20 framed photo with Borgata chip and event information plaque.

The poker professional used to be an online grinder, but has moved to brick-and-mortar since Black Friday, plus grinding online in Mexico.  He cashed in the WSOP Main Event this summer (407th place for $28,063) but this is his largest win on record.

Event 4: 2nd Place - Coelho

 $500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Level 32:  Blinds 80k/160k/20k ante

 Vitor Coelho (Tampa, FL)
$25,099

Eric Rappaport raised on the button, then Vitor Coelho shoved.

Eric called, showing AQ suited.

Vitor's KQ was dominated.

The board fell A 6 4 8 T and Eric took the last hand of the tournament.

Vitor took 2nd place and $25,099.  He just missed claiming his second Borgata Open title.  Vitor won the $1,500 NLH event during the 2009 Borgata Poker Open, good for $107,100.

Vitor has to return home to look after his real estate and car businesses, but plans to return to Borgata for the Championship event.

Event 6 - I scoff at your overset!

$1,000 Buy-In + $90 Entry $150,000 No Limit Hold'Em (Re-Entry)

The board read 7♦6♣4♣ and three players had all their chips in the middle. Anthony Cicali (Riverside, NJ) was in the lead with pocket 7's giving him top set. Patrick Smith (Montgomery, AL) was in 2nd place with pocket 6's for a middle set. The third player was drawing live with the Q♣5♣ for an open-ended straight draw and a flush draw. The turn paired the board prompting Cicali to think "sweet, I got a boat" before realizing the card was the 4th six in the deck giving Smith quads. Not all was lost for Cicali, however, as he now had the 3rd opponent drawing dead for the huge side pot. Smith tripled up to 65K and Cicali was up to just over 90K.

Quad sixes wins a big pot

Cicali tweeted afterwards about the hand:

Event 1 (Complete) Video Recap

The kick-off event of the Borgata Poker Open is an event that players circle on their calendar, just like the opening weekend of football.  The 2013 Borgata Poker Open event 1 ($560 Big Stack No Limit Hold'em) did not disappoint as we saw the largest overall field (4,412) and one-day field (Day 1B - 2,812) in Borgata history.

Not to be overshadowed was an unprecedented run from Dan Wach (Boonton, NJ).   Wach finished runner-up in this same event last year for $200,793, and went on to duplicate that feat this year, falling short at the hands of Maksim Rozenfeld (Staten Island, NY), but still earning $235,627.

We took the four days and shaped them into a short video recap, including your final table results:

"It feels good," said Engelbert, "I finally beat Chris, that's the big story."

Reslock went out in fourth place after bluffing off all but 2k of his stack in a 700k chip pot.

"He's always the one you worry about," said Engelbert who won two Borgata trophies in 2011. "We've played together for years and he's always had my number."

On the final hand of the tournament, Engelbert flopped the wheel to knockout Renner in second place.

"It could have been worse," said Renner, who was down to 8k at the final table. "I came from less than a big blind to second place. It's hard to be disappointed with that."

Renner lost the big hand to Gabriel Ramos (Durham, NC), who finished 5th, while Jared Hamburger (Beacon, NY) came in third place.

The two-day event began with 106 entries and broke the money bubble late on Day 1. The final 16 returned for the finale with Engelbert starting the day 3rd in chips behind Renner and chip leader Kevin Kenkelen (Delanco, NJ), who bubbled the final table in 11th place.

Engelbert, a recycling coordinator in Gloucester Township, never relinquished the chip lead at the final table and was lucky he survived Day 1.  "I may not make dinner break," was the text he sent his wife Beverly when was down to 1,200. But a good run of cards got him to 52k by the break.

"I made some tough calls," said Engelbert on the key to his Day 2 success.  "I didn't have strong hands, but fortunately they were bluffing."

Recognizable names who got their piece of the $42,400 total buy-in included Shawn Busse (10th), Frank Rasile (14th), Allen Chou (15th) and Neal Levine (16th).

Engelbert's three trophies have come in three different disciplines; Omaha H/L, H.O.S.E & Limit.  The win denied Reslock, who has two PLO titles along with a H.O.R.S.E. win, from joining Will "The Thrill" Failla, as the only four-time Borgata trophy holders.

Engelbert: A-10-5-2
Renner: K-8-6-2

Chris Reslock, who was going for his fourth Borgata trophy, finished in fourth place.

Engelbert, with his wife Beverly at his side, earns $12,337 for the win to go along with his 2011 H.O.S.E and Limit titles.

Event 5: 2nd Place - Renner

$400 + $50 Omaha H/L 8B

 Robert Renner (Langhorne, PA)
$6,786

Robert Renner had a nearly impossible hill to climb heads up against Glenn Engelbert, who had 90% of the chips heads up, and settles for second place after Engelbert flops the wheel on the final hand.

"It could have been worse," says Renner, who was down to 8k at the final table. "I came from less than a big blind to second place. It's hard to be disappointed with that."

The key hand that crippled Renner came against Gabriel Ramos.

Blinds 30k/60k

Ramos: A-Q-10-4
Renner: Q-10-10-7

Ramos wins the pot with two pairs, Queens and 4s and jumps up to 350k, while Renner loses 175k on the hand and is left with 8k.

Brian Adragna got his short-stack in on the button and called by Abraham Korotki in the big blind.

Heads Up Chip Counts

Glenn Engelbert 1.45 million
Robert Renner 150k

Event 5: 4th Place - Reslock

$400 + $50 Omaha H/L 8B

Chris Reslock (Atlantic City, NJ)
$3,290

Limits 40k/80k

Chris Reslock bets the entire way and chip leader Glenn Engelbert calls him down with the winner.

Reslock: J-10-5-5
Engelbert: A-10-4-3

Board: Q-9-4-3-2

"All I had was pair of 5s, and knew it wasn't any good," says Reslock who lost 350k on the hand and is left with only 2k; Reslock busts a few hands later.

Engelbert gets the scoop with two pairs, 3s and 4s and continues to dominate the table with 1 million of the 1.6 million chips in play.

Reslock, the three-time Borgata trophy holder, finishes in fourth place for $3,290.

Event 4: 10th Place - Cucchiara

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Level 23:  Blinds 10k/20k/3k ante

 Paul Cucchiara (New York, NY)
$2,175

Paul Cucchiara got his last chips in with KT and was called by Jason Gardner, who held AK suited.

The board ran out 4 3 2 3 A and Jason took the pot.  He's now up to over 1 million chips.

Paul exited the tournament in 10th place, earning $2,175.

Event 5: 5th place Ramos

$400 + $50 Omaha H/L 8B

 Gabriel Ramos (Durham, NC)
$2,468

Limits 40k/80k

Gabriel Ramos misses an open ended straight flush draw and loses all but 60k of his stack to chip leader Glenn Engelbert.

Ramos: 2 3 7♣ 8♣
Engelbert: K-K-2-3

Flop: 9♣ 2 3

Ramos bricks the turn and river and  Engelbert's pair of Kings scoops the pot. The last of Ramos' chips are eventually chopped up by Jared Hamburger and Robert Renner.

"There's a lot of variance in this game," says Ramos, who shrugs his shoulders and heads to the pay window for the $2,468 he earns for his 5th place finish.

Event 4: Coelho Triples

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Level 23:  Blinds 10k/20k/3k ante

Vitor Coelho

Gabriel Leost opened for 54k.

Abraham Korotki called.

Vitor Coelho shoved for 314k total.

Gabriel called; Abraham called.

On the flop of A J T rainbow, Gabriel checked, Abraham bet, and Gabriel folded.

The hands were tabled.

Abraham:  TT for a set
Vitor: AK for top pair

Turn was a 5 and changed nothing.

"Queen!" Vitor said.  Sure enough, river was a Queen, giving him Broadway and the triple-up.  He's now up to ~ 1 million.

Abraham dropped to ~1.66 million.

Event 4: Clash of the Titans

$500 + $60 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Level 22:  Blinds 8k/16k/2k ante

Gabriel Leost & Abraham Korotki

With the redraw, the two big stacks landed next to each other, so it was inevitable that they would clash.

After Paul Cucchiara opened for 38k in the middle, Gabriel Leost (cutoff) called, then Abraham Korotki called (button).

On the flop of A Q 9 rainbow, Paul checked.  Gabriel fired 78k and Abraham called.

Paul thought about it, then mucked his hand in disgust (later saying it was pocket Kings).

Turn was a 3 and both checked.

River was a 4 and Gabriel again bet 78k.  Abraham called.

Gabriel showed QJ for a pair of Queens.  Abraham showed A5 for a pair of Aces to take the pot.

After that hand, the chip lead is too close to call.  Gabriel dropped to ~2 million while Abraham chipped up to ~2 million.

Board: 7-8-8-10-9

With no low,  Renner, who was down to 8k the previous level, gets the triple-up with a 10-high straight.

Hofer finishes in 6th place for $2,056.

Event 4 - End of Day One

    $500 Buy-In + $60 Entry Deep Stack No Limit Hold'Em (Re-Entry)

Play has concluded for the day and we have 32 players remaining. Play will resume at 12 p.m tomorrow afternoon. Adam Levitan, who took 6th in a Borgata Spring Poker Open event in 2011, is 2nd in chips with 580K. The current chip leader is Seong Hong from College Point, New York who was the benefactor of a huge hand when the bubble burst when he was faced with a 200K+ all in re-raise. It was an easy call for Hong who had flopped a set of aces. That set would turn into quads and the pot would catapult Hong into the chip lead, one he would not relinquish the rest of the night. Hong finishes the evening with 623K.

Full chip counts and seating assignments will be available on the blog before play resumes tomorrow.

    Event 5: Bubble Burst

    $400 + $50 Omaha H/L 8B

    Level 18: Limits 8k/16k

A short-stack got his chips in good with a set of Aces, but Shawn Busse made a wheel to scoop the pot, sending his opponent to the rail as the bubble boy.

The final 18 drew for seats and resumed play.  Here they are:

    $500 Buy-In + $60 Entry Deep Stack No Limit Hold'Em (Re-Entry)

    Blinds 3000/6000 Ante 500

In hand for hand play on a flop of A♠8♣5 Seong Hong (College Point, NY) was facing a bet of 30K from his opponent. Hong made it 100K and his opponent moved all in for about 100K more. Hong snap called and turned over pocket aces. His opponent held 8-6 and would need a miracle to survive. The turn was a miracle but it was one for Hong as it was the case ace to give him quads. With that elimination, we are officially in the money. 36 players remain. Hong is at approximately 625K after the hand.
