Championship Event Winner - Zinno

$3300 + $200 Championship Deep Stack Double Play NLH

 Anthony Zinno (Cranston, RI)
 $825,099

After seizing the chip lead, Anthony Zinno puts the final pressure on Vanessa Selbst.

Zinno raises to 1.2 million, Selbst moves all in for nearly 8 million and Zinno calls putting Selbst at risk.

Zinno: A♣ 6
Selbst: K♠ 10♣

Flop: Q♣ 9♣ 7♠ (Zinno still leads, Selbst gutshot straight draw)

Turn: 5 (no change)

River: 4♣

Zinno wins the hand with Ace high to take the tournament, the WPT Borgata Poker Open title and $825,099 first place prize.

"The fact that I'm now a WPT Champion, it's a dream come true for any poker player," says Zinno who earns his first career title and largest tournament cash.

The 32-year-old, who passed the Massachusettes bar exam and then passed on being a lawyer to play poker, is mildly surprised at this success. "I knew it would eventually come, but didn't think it would come yet," he says after two years of intense playing, "so in that sense it hasn't sunk in yet."

Zinno had the Event Center crowd on his side as he calls Borgata his home casino. His rail included girlfriend Jackie and Mike "Little Man" Sica, who has been battling cancer and made it a point to be on hand.

"I would love to dedicate this win to "Little Man" as an inspiration, as a mentor, as a friend, as a consumate professional poker player and everybody loves him," says Zinno.

The first place prize money includes entry into the season-ending WPT World Championship which will be held in spring 2014, and for the first time at Borgata.  Zinno also gets a smaller version of the WPT Champions Cup and a framed winner's photograph provided by Borgata and IMPDI photography.

This is Zinno's 18th career Borgata cash and third of the series, including a 3rd place in Event 6 ($1k entry) and he finished 14th in the H.O.R.S.E event.

Zinno adds that with the life changing money, he'll pay off his law school loans, start a college fund for his 10 month old nephew Pasqual, and make a donation to the AMA Animal Rescue in New York.

"I couldn't be prouder, what a blessing. I always count my blessings, had I come in sixth I'd be smiling, but this is a blessing, a double blessing."

Championship Event Recap

$3300 + $200 Championship Deep Stack Double Play NLH

One of the most educated final tables in WPT history came down to two lawyers battling for the WPT title.  And when the final verdict came in, Anthony Zinno (Cranston, RI) is "guilty" of beating Vanessa Selbst (Las Vegas, NV) heads up to win the Borgata Poker Open Championship Event.

On the final hand, Zinno's A♣ 6 holds against K♠ 10♣ to win the tournament and the $825,099 first place prize.

"The money hasn't sunk in yet," said Zinno in front of his rowdy rail at his home casino. "The title means a tremenous amount. I get to play in that $25,000 (WPT World) Championship, that's big enough as it is. The fact that I'm now a WPT Champion, it's a dream come true for any poker player."

For Selbst it was another close call in becoming the first woman to win a WPT televised open event.

"I was fortune just to get to heads up and I had a shot at it," said Selbst, who was playing in her second WPT final table after a third place finish in 2011. "I'm sure I'll be back again and close it out next time," and added, "$490k is a nice consolation prize."

The TV final table of six players began with the three short stacks going out first.

Chip leader Cong "Andy" Pham (Naples, FL) spiked an Ace on the river with AK against the pocket Jacks of  Eric Fields (Greensboro, NC) to send the shortest stack out first. Pham, who was the chip leader after Days 1A, Day 3 and Day 4, hit the 20 million chip mark and had more than half the chips in play.

The remaining players chipped away at Pham, including Jeremy Kottler (Los Angeles, CA), who doubled-up through Pham with AK against AQ. Kottler's new life continued when he knocked out David Randall (Westerville, OH), the second shortest returning stack, in 5th place. Kottler flopped an Ace against Randall's pocket Jacks.

The final four players, Kottler, Selbst, Cong and Zinno, tightened up after Selbst doubled through Cong when the river double-paired the board to counterfit Cong's pair of 9s.  After the hand, Kottler held the lead as all four players ranged from 11 million to 7 million chips.

"That Hurt," said Cong, "If I win that I'm in great shape."

Kottler's chip lead and momentum is short lived when he sent a double-up to Cong with AJ vs AK that left him with less than 3 million before being eliminated by Selbst in fourth place.

"I still don't know (if it was mistake)," said Kottler about the hand with Cong. "It was a button vs small blind situation and he's a very aggressive player, so I just don't know," he said. Kottler was the third straight elimination in order of returning stack size from the bottom, up.

After Zinno and Selbst traded double-ups, Selbst had the chip lead over Zinno and Cong who were even in chips. And when Zinno knocked out Cong in third place with AK against AQ, Zinno was just behind Selbst when the two squared off.

"Heads up play, when you're looking at 30 or 40 big blinds, it's quite card dependent," said Zinno. "Vanessa is one of the best no limit hold'em tournament players in the world, but I happen to have been playing a lot of heads up poker these last few months. So my comfort level there is through the roof."

Selbst built a 2 to 1 chip lead, but Zinno flipped the script when his A-10 held against A-8 and faded a river flush draw.

"Unfortunately cards just don't go your way sometimes," said Selbst, who now has nearly $8 million in career tournament earnings. "I ran good to get to heads up. I was all in with the worst hand and got lucky to survive. I don't really have regrets."

Shortly after Zinno doubled-up he won the tournament with A-6.

The fifth largest field in WPT history began with 1,189 entries and featured two starting days. Pham picked up a $5,000 bonus for being the Day 1A chip leader, while Paul Volpe (West Chester, PA), who finished 39th, earned the prize for Day 1B.

Pham was literally one of the big stacks the entire tournament, while Zinno and Selbst maintained healthy stacks as well.

The bubble broke on Day 3 with little drama as 110 players earned at least a $7,123 min cash, while the start of the big money was handed out the following day.  A couple of Borgata regulars had strong routing sections on Day 4 in Alex Rocha (S. Setauket, NY) and Dan Howe (Brigantine, NJ), but they missed making the final TV table.

Rocha bubbled the final table of 10 and earned $45,278 for 11th place, while Howe bubbled the TV final table by going out 7th for $132,615.

The rest of the final table included Richard Tatalovich (8th), Cliff Josephy (9th) and Tyler Gaston (10th).

The list of players who grabbed a piece of the $3,923,700 total buy-in included:

23rd Matt Glantz (Former Borgata Event Winner)
27th Leonardo Palermo (27th Borgata cash)
28th Ian Palomo (20th Borgata cash)
42nd Alex Queen (Two time Borgata Trophy holder)
46th Matt Salsberg (reigning WPT Player of the Year)
47th Bobby Oboodi (2011 WPT Borgata Poker Open Champion)
59th Jonathan Little (2 time WPT Champion)
60th Dan Buzgon (28th Borgata cash)
63rd Allen Kessler (3 time Borgata Trophy holder)
68th Ryan Riess (2013 November Niner)
78th Eric Baldwin (WSOP bracelet)
80th Victor Ramdin (83rd lifetime cash)

When the field was thinned to Zinno and Selbst, they could have just as easily squared off in a courtroom.  Zinno earned his law degree and passed the Massachusetts bar exam, while Selbst has her law degree from Yale University.

"This will literally change my life in the sense that I can spend time with people again," said Zinno who made a full time committment to poker two years ago and has been consumed by the game. "I knew it (big break through) would eventually come, but didn't think it would come yet, so in that sense it hasn't sunk in yet."

Championship: 2nd Place - Selbst

 Vanessa Selbst (Las Vegas, NV)
$492,569

Vanessa Selbst and Anthony Zinno began heads up play virtually even in chips, but the cards didn't cooperate with Selbst who settles for runner-up in the WPT Borgata Poker Open Championship Event.

On the final hand, Selbst's K♠ 10♣ doesn't improve against Zinno's A♣ 6.

"I was fortune just to get to heads up and I had a shot at it," says Selbst who would have been the first woman to win a televised WPT open event. "I'm sure I'll be back again and close it out next time."

This was Selbst second career WPT final table, improving on her 3rd place finish in 2011. While she doesn't add a WPT title to her resume, which features 11 titles and two WSOP bracelets, her second place finish takes her career earnings to nearly $8 million.

"$490k is a nice consolation prize," she says on her way to the cage.

This is Selbt's second Borgata cash after making a deep run in the 2011 WPT Borgata Poker Open with a 23rd place finish.

Our bubble boy is Gabriel Ohana who recently took 2nd in the Pot Limit Omaha tournament for $6,635. Ohana had found himself getting blinded off and had the last of his chips in the middle from the big blind. He was able to pair his biggest card but so was his opponent. Ohana was unable to hit his kicker and he puts up a gracious smile as he heads to the rail.

Championship: WPT Borgata Poker Open Video Review

The 2013 installment of the WPT Borgata Poker Open Champion event saw many things, showing us once again why it's one of the most prestigious events of the year.

Taking their seat in the Event Center for the event were past WPT winners, WPT players of the year, WSOP bracelet winners, a member of the "November Nine," and all of the familiar faces we know and love. We heard blockbuster announcement about the WPT World Championship event moving to Borgata (April 2014), and even saw a player open muck pocket kings after makings kings-full on the river.

Now that last move may not have been the worst fold in the world, because that player currently sits with the chip lead at the final table. Here is a video recap turning four days of action into three minutes:

Event 25: Three-Way Sick Hand

Level 17: Blinds 3k/6k/500 ante

Gene Mazza

Gene Mazza (Elizabeth, NJ) jammed, then another player shoved over the top, then a third player called all-in for less.

The hands were tabled:

Gene: 6♣3♣
Unsub1: KK
Unsub2: QQ

It looked like Gene was in bad shape.  Then the flop came T7♣5♣, giving him both straight and flush draws.

Turn was the miracle 4♣, giving Gene the straight-flush and a lock on the hand.  The river was irrelevant to him, but not to the side pot.

River was an 8.  Gene tripled up to about 120k.

The player with pocket Kings took the side pot and the player with Queens hit the rail.

Kottler: 5♣ 5♠
Selbst:  A 6♣

Flop: A♣ 4♠ 8

Turn: A

River:7♠

Selbst's trip aces wins the hand and knocks out Kottler in 4th place.

"I still don't know," says Kottler moments after his elimination, reflecting on if it was mistake to be all in with AJ against Cong Pham's AK.

"It was a button vs small blind situation and he's a very aggressive player, so I just don't know," he says about the hand that crippled him.

Kottler earns $251,968, to push his career tournament earnings to nearly $1 million.  He considers himself semi professional and is also a commercial real estate broker.

This is Kottler's second career WPT televised final table (6th place, 2012) and first career Borgata cash.

"I'm drained," says Kottler while standing with his brother Zak, "it's been a grueling few days."

The Kottler brothers made history with the combined highest finish in a WPT event.  Zak finished 15th for $30,312 and along with Jeremy's 4th place finish they beat the mark set here last year.

Vinny and Mukul Pahjua held the previous record with Vinny finishing 16th and Mukul coming in 34th place during the 2012 WPT Borgata Poker open.
