Event 16 Recap

$1500 + $150 + $500 Purple Chip Bounty Heads Up NLH

A quality field of 64 players at the Borgata Poker Open came down to an evenly matched final between Kevin Saul (Chicago, IL) and David Paredes (New York, NY). The two played their heads up, best of three, final for nearly four hours and on the last hand, Saul hit a King on the river while holding K Q against Paredes' pocket 9s to win his second Borgata trophy.

"He was a tough player," said Saul who earned $37,248 for the win and rallied from a 1-0 deficit to take the title.  And both players agreed that a Saul bluff in Game 2 was the pivotal hand in the match.

"It was a tough spot, I was very close to calling," said Paredes who would have doubled-up and severely crippled Saul, "but I didn't want to call off the second match."

"I had to bluff you one time," said Saul after Paredes folded and Saul tabled Jack high on a 10♠ 5♠ 3♠ K 9 board. "You're the most unbluffable person, now I don't care what happens."

Saul maintained his chip lead in Game 2 and rode the momentum to the win.

"It was a close call between jamming, check-calling and check-folding," said Paredes who mucked his cards. "I'll replay that one and I'm still not sure what the right option was."

Paredes made an impressive run through the field with five straight 2-0 series wins, and with a 1-nothing lead in the finals, won 11 straight games before losing the final two.

The day began with four quarterfinal matches and the remaining eight players all in the money. The field of 64, in the NCAA basketball style bracket, put up $96,000 in total buy-ins and played three rounds on Day 1.

Four former Borgata Heads Up champions were in the field, but none of them cashed.

Chalie Hook (2009 Summer Open), Jesse Yaginuma (2009 Poker Open) and Jeremy McLaughlin (2010 Poker Open) all lost in the first round, while Christian Harder (2011 Poker Open) was one win away from the money, but lost to lost to Jeffrey Coon in the third round.

The stacked field also featured 5-time Borgata trophy winner Will "The Thrill" Failla, 2005 WSOP runner-up Steve Dannenmann and the only woman to enter the tournament, Amanda Musumeci.

In addition to the standard prize pool, $500 bounties were paid out after each match.

Saul now has bookend trophies after he won an event during the 2012 Borgata Winter Open.

"I love heads up," says Saul who earns his second Borgata trophy. "I normally don't 3-bet that deep, but I thought he would 3-bet fold often enough that it was the correct play. And even if I lose, I still have chips to fight with. He was a tough player."

Saul rallies from a 1-0 deficit to win the final two games to win the heads up tournament and tweets back to Paredes:

    Number of Entrants: 245
    Total Prize Pool: $83,178

    FINAL RESULTS

By far the shortest stack with four players left to play, professional poker player David Rosenau never panicked and was able to pick up some key hands and pots at the right time in order to cruise to victory over what was one of the toughest final four seen here at Borgata. His foes were none other than "Miami" John Cernuto who would finish in 4th, Tim Little who would finish in 3rd, and eventual runner-up Paul Spitzberg. The long-time poker pro was down to just under 200K when he doubled up against John Cernuto with A-J against A-8. Another double up later, he then took the chip lead when he bested Cernuto again... this time with A-Q against A-J. David continued his hot run by eliminating Tim Little next when he flopped top pair against Tim's middle pair. Heads up it only took a few hands as this time David's pocket 7's would flop a set against Spitzberg's A-9 to give him the tournament victory and the $23,286 first place prize, Borgata trophy and a customized 16 x 20 framed photo with Borgata chip and event information plaque.

     David Rosenau, Winner Event #15 - $23,286

When our final ten started the seating assignments and chip counts were as follows:

Seat 1: Michael Golub, Bayside, NY 300K
Seat 2: David Rosenau, Absecon, NJ 325K
Seat 3: Bill Kitzerow, Southold, NY 100K
Seat 4: Alyson Parker, Plainsboro, NJ 100K
Seat 5: John Cernuto, Las Vegas, NV 325K
Seat 6: Steve Seeleman, Westchester, PA 70K
Seat 7: David Heck, Colts Neck, NJ 350K
Seat 8: Kevin Haynes, New York, NY 550K
Seat 9: Paul "Gray Aces" Spitzberg, Tenafly, NJ 1.0 million
Seat 10: Tim Little, Cheverly, MD 400K

Play moved quickly as all of the short stacks would fall by the wayside. There were numerous big hands that took place over the course of the final table. First, Paul Spitzberg would eliminate both Bill Kitzerow and Alyson Parker on the same hand when he picked up kings against Kitzerow's 8's and Parker's queens. Paul would get kings again and eliminate Steve Seeleman in the process. Then it was Tim Little's turn to pick up a big pair and his queens would send David Heck off to the cashier's cage. Michael Golub would pick up two big pairs. The first, queens, would double him up against John Cernuto. The second, kings, would send a good chunk of his stack off to David Rosenau when Rosenau's A-J hit an ace. Kevin Haynes then picked up kings to double through Rosenau.

When play got four handed, John Cernuto doubled through Paul Spitzberg with A-K against A-Q and then would lose most of those chips to David Rosenau when his A-J was no match for Rosenau's A-Q. The final hand of the tournament pitted Paul Spitzberg with a suited A-9 against the 7's of Rosenau. David would flop a set and that would be the end of the tournament.

The payouts for the final ten were as follows:

    1st - David Rosenau $23,286
    2nd - Paul Spitzberg $13,724
    3rd - Tim Little $7,902
    4th - John Cernuto $6,405
    5th - Kevin Haynes $4,991
    6th - Michael Golub $4,159
    7th - David Heck $3,327
    8th - Steve Seeleman $2,495
    9th - Bill Kitzerow $1,664
    10th - Alyson Parker $1,081

This is Rosenau's 2nd Borgata Open win as he won a 7 Card Stud tournament in the 2012 Borgata Winter Open. He also had a 7th place finisher earlier this week in the H.O.R.S.E. tournament. "I'm tired," a weary Rosenau said. "I mainly play cash games. I don't play tournaments much." Rosenau said he doesn't have any plans on playing the Championship Event.

    Event 15th - 1st place Rosenau

    $350 + $50 Seniors (50+) No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

    Blinds 25K/50K Ante 5K

David Rosenau was the short stack four handed but picked up the right hands at the right time and cruised to victory over a tough final four that included Tim Little, John Cernuto, and Paul Spitzberg. The long-time poker professional was down to just under 200K when he doubled up against John Cernuto with A-J against A-8. Another double up later, he then took the chip lead when he bested Cernuto again... this time with A-Q against A-J. David continued his hot run by eliminated Tim Little next when he flopped top pair against Tim's middle pair. Heads up it only took a few hands, this time with David holding 7's against Spitzberg's A-9. A seven on the flop was more then enough to give Rosenau the tournament win.

    Congratulations on the win David!

David Rosenau (Absecon, NJ) - $23,286

    Event 15 - 2nd place Spitzberg

    $350 + $50 Seniors (50+) No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

    Blinds 25K/50K Ante 5K

Paul Spitzberg came into heads up play with David Rosenau down about 2:1 in chips. Paul decided A9 was a good hand to go with and put all his chips in the middle. It was a race with Rosenau who held pocket 7's. Spitzberg hit the flop hard even though his opponent hit a set when it came 87♣6 but the turn and river bricked out and that was the end of the tournament. Spitzberg added to his impressive poker resume that includes a win in a 2013 Borgata Spring Poker Open event. The cash puts him over the 600K mark in lifetime winnings.

Paul Spitzberg (Tenafly, NJ) - $13,724

    Event 15- 3rd place Little

    $350 + $50 Seniors (50+) No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

    Blinds 25K/50K Ante 5K

On a flop of K-6-2, Tim Little led out for 120K and David Rosenau made it 250K to go. Little moved all in and David made the call. Tim held T-6 for middle pair but was behind Rosenau's top pair with K-9. The turn or river was not a 6 or ten for Tim and he finishes in 3rd place adding to his earlier 2nd place finish a week ago.

Tim Little (Cheverly, MD) - $7,902

    Event 15 - 4th place Cernuto

    $350 + $50 Seniors (50+) No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

    Blinds 25K/50K Ante 5K

After losing most of his stack with A-J to David Rosenau's A-Q, John Cernuto moved his last 300K in with Q-9 and was up against Paul's K-J. No help at all came to save "Miami" John's tournament life and he exited the tournament adding another cash to his impressive poker career.

John Cernuto (Las Vegas, NV) - $6,405

Kevin Haynes (New York, NY) - $4,991

    Event 15 - 6th place Golub

    $350 + $50 Seniors (50+) No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

A short stacked Michael Golub moved all in for his last 80K with T♣6 and was called by Tim Little out of the big blind with A3. The flop gave Golub an open ended straight draw but he could not hit any of his many outs and was our next player eliminated.

Paul Spitzberg opened the action for 62K. Bill Kitzerow moved all in for 109K. Alyson Parker also moved all in for 102K. Paul Spitzberg said "I'm calling" and turned over pocket kings. Bill had 8's and Alyson had queens. The board ran out 4-4-3-2-K to give Spitzberg a full house and knock out Parker in 10th place and Kitzerow in 9th place as he had Parker just barely outchipped.

Alyson Parker (Plainsboro, NJ) - $1,081

Bill Kitzerow (Southold, NY) - $1,664

    Event 14 Recap

    $350 + $50 Deep Stack Semi-Turbo NLH (Re-Entry)

A stacked final table came down to one of the hottest players at the Borgata Poker Open and
a cook who served up the win.  Antonio Amato (Downingtown, PA) defeated Andrew Jeffrey (Mansfield, OH) heads up to take title, trophy and $18,128 first place prize.

On the final hand, Amato held A♠ 8♣, flopped an 8 and rivered trips against Jeffrey's pocket 5s.

"It feels really good," said Amato who works as a cook and is a Borgata regular.  "Of course you need luck, that's the number one thing. It's not me, it was the cards."

Luck played a big role for Amato heads-up when Jeffrey was one card from winning the tournament.  Amato hit a gutshot straight on the river in a 3 million chip pot to double-up and flip the count into his favor before winning.

"It sucks," said Jeffrey, who finished runner-up for the second time in the series, "to get this close and not get the trophy."

Jeffrey earned $9,971, after he won $67,000 in Event 8 ($560 entry) for finishing second, the top two tournament cashes of his career.

Also at the final table were Borgata standouts Wade Woelfel (Mankato, MN) and David Inselberg (Long Beach, NY).

Woelfel finished third for his 7th Borgata top 5 finish in the last three years, while Inselberg earned his 16th Borgata cash with a fourth place finish. The two have a combined $1.2 million in career tournament earnings (Inselberg $700,000) with Woelfel earning $140,000 of his $500,000 at Borgata.

178 entries combined for $62,300 in total buy-ins and 18 players got their piece of the prize pool.  Recognizable names to make the money included Zaur Mamedov (6th), Joe Opie (10th), Amir Genzel (11th) Grace Sun (13th), who picked up her second cash of the series, and Kori Hunter (17th).

Amato said he recently returned to the game a few months ago after a five year break. He comes to Borgata "a few times a week," for the daily tournaments and loves the semi-turbo format.

"It feels really good," says Amato, who works as a cook and is a Borgata regular. "I like the fast structure," he says of the turbo format.

The key heads up hand came when Amato was at risk with KJ against Jeffrey's A9.

The flop came Q 9 x, giving Amato a gutshot straight draw, which he hit with a river 10.  The 1.5 million chip double-up gave Amato the chip lead and the eventual title.

Amato earns $18,128 for the win and a framed winner's photograph from IMPDI.

    Andrew Jeffrey (Mansfield, OH)

It's another close call for Andrew Jeffrey, but the poker pro has to settle for his second runner-up finish of the Borgata Poker Open.

"It sucks," he says about finishing second to Antonio Amato, "to get this close and not get the trophy."

Jeffrey had Amato drawing to a four-outer for the title, but Amato hit a gutshot straight on the river and doubled-up before winning a few hands later.

On the final hand, Jeffrey's pocket 5s are beaten by A-8 when Amato flops an 8 and rivers trips.

Earlier in the series, Jeffrey finished second to Johnson Nguyen in Event 8 ($560 entry) for a $67,000 payday, the largest of his tournament career.

Jeffrey adds $9,971 for this runner-up finish, the second largest of his career.
